I love sports because there is always something to talk about and something else to look forward to. This week serves as a shining example of that claim. Personally, I am through talking about the Super Bowl, or maybe I am just sick of it, yet talk about the officials and their crazy calls will continue to permeate the print, online, TV and radio media right up until my third shot of Jack Daniels at the Tropicana on Friday night. Meanwhile, thoughts of palm trees blowing in the wind under the Florida sunshine, with a few uniformed millionaires throwing a ball around, these thoughts are starting to form in the back of my head. It is a great time of year to be a sports fan, with the NBA and this year the NHL taking us right up to Opening Day. A few random thoughts:
SUPER BOWL: All I really want to say is that if I were a Seahawks fan, and I include Seahawk wagerers in that group, I would be upset. While the calls were bad (may have been bad), the Seahawks missed opportunities and made mistakes that lead to the loss. I give Pittsburgh full credit.
NHL: A bad week for Flyer fans saw the team lose three terrible games (0-6 to Tampa Bay, who own the Flyers at this point, 3-4 OT to the Rangers, a loss that hurt because the Flyers were leading with less than a minute to play and the loss cost the team first place in the division, and 0-5 to Montreal), a setback for Peter Forsberg, a major setback to Captain Keith Primeau, and most recently, the pending arrest of former Flyer great Rick Tocchet for financially backing a sports betting ring that had alleged mob ties. The Tocchet scandal hurts, as Rick Tocchet was my third favorite Flyer ever, after Ron Hextall and Tim Kerr. In the history of my long standing relationship with professional sports teams, the 1986-87 Flyers were my first true love, and Tocchet was a valuable member of that team. Good luck, Rick Tocchet.
MLB: I originally didn't want to do it, but I went to a Phillies game early on last season. I had to see the new ballpark, and the tickets were discounted. I really think Citizens Bank Park is a great place to watch a game. I hope the prospect of a fun stadium does it for enough Phillies fans, because the team itself is not going to be drawing them in after June or July. I don't think we will be agonizing over trade deadline moves this season, unless it is moving Bobby Abreu (a mistake) or Jon Lieber. How can the Phillies give a 38 year old reliever a three year contract? How did the Mets give 47 year old Julio Franco a two year contract? I wondered why Ryan Franklin over say, Josh Fogg... (more Phillies coming)
